OBJECTIVES

01

Strengthen trauma-informed teaching in VET through targeted training

A central objective of SAFELAB is to enhance the capacity of VET educators to understand, recognize and respond to the presence of trauma within learning environments. Research cited in the project proposal indicates that a significant proportion of young people have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences, which can influence cognitive development, emotional regulation and engagement with education. Although VET institutions work with diverse learners, many educators feel underprepared to identify trauma-related behaviours or to implement strategies that foster emotional safety. SAFELAB addresses this need by offering structured, research-informed training that empowers educators with both theoretical understanding and practical application.

The training programme introduces participants to the nature and prevalence of trauma and its long-term effects on learning, behaviour and mental health. Through guided sessions, educators explore indicators of distress, learn to interpret behavioural cues within an empathetic framework and develop an understanding of how trauma can disrupt concentration, memory and communication. The training also emphasises the creation of safe and predictable classroom environments that help students regulate emotions and remain engaged in their studies.

Hands-on exercises, case studies, interactive discussions and role-play scenarios ensure that educators can apply trauma-informed strategies in real situations. Participants learn methods for building trusting relationships, using supportive communication techniques and developing routines that promote stability and confidence. The programme facilitates peer exchange across Portugal, Greece and Lithuania, allowing educators to learn from diverse professional contexts and share insights that enrich the collective learning experience.

Through this objective, SAFELAB contributes to the professionalisation of the VET sector by equipping educators with competencies that directly enhance student well-being. Schools become safer, more inclusive and more supportive environments where learners who have experienced trauma feel understood, valued and capable of succeeding academically and personally. The result is a long-term improvement in teaching quality and institutional resilience across European VET systems.

02

Develop a practical Trauma-Informed Toolkit and digital e-Handbook

Another core objective of SAFELAB is the creation of an accessible and comprehensive Trauma-Informed Toolkit accompanied by a multilingual, audiovisual e-Handbook. These resources are designed to serve as long-term reference materials that support educators in applying trauma-informed practices consistently within vocational education settings. The proposal emphasises that educators often lack structured, practical tools that translate theoretical knowledge into everyday teaching strategies. SAFELAB therefore aims to bridge this gap by producing materials that are both pedagogically robust and user-friendly.

The Trauma-Informed Toolkit will contain classroom strategies, guidelines for establishing emotionally safe learning environments and practical instructions for recognising and responding to student distress. It will include examples of real-life scenarios, suggested activities for fostering resilience and step-by-step guidance on integrating trauma-sensitive principles into lesson planning, assessment and classroom management. The toolkit is intended to be immediately applicable, allowing educators to adapt its content to a wide range of VET contexts.

The digital e-Handbook expands this toolkit by offering audiovisual explanations, case studies, good practices and implementation pathways. It will be produced in all partner languages to ensure accessibility and will serve as a living document that reflects the evolving needs of educators. The handbook also synthesises research findings and insights drawn from training activities, stakeholder consultations and feedback from participants. It will encourage reflective practice and continuous professional growth.

This objective contributes significantly to the sustainability of SAFELAB. By producing open-access materials, the project ensures that the benefits of trauma-informed education extend well beyond the project’s duration. Educators, institutions and stakeholders across Europe will be able to download, use and disseminate the handbook, helping to embed trauma-sensitive approaches at systemic level. Ultimately, this objective supports the establishment of VET environments where understanding, empathy and pedagogical innovation work together to promote student success.

03

Create a digital platform for educators’ continuous professional development

SAFELAB seeks to establish a digital learning platform that supports educators in maintaining and deepening their trauma-informed competences over time. The proposal highlights the importance of ongoing professional development and the need for accessible, flexible learning formats that complement traditional training. The digital platform therefore functions as a central hub where educators can access materials, revisit training content, participate in online exchanges and contribute to a community of practice focused on trauma-informed education.

The platform will host the e-Handbook, training modules, interactive learning materials and audiovisual content that support various learning styles. Educators will be able to navigate content at their own pace, return to essential concepts and apply insights directly to their classroom practice. The platform will also include opportunities for peer interaction, allowing educators to share experiences, ask questions and collaborate on solutions to common challenges. This exchange of perspectives across countries and institutions enhances collective knowledge and fosters a sense of professional belonging.

A key benefit of the platform is its sustainability. It ensures that training does not remain a one-time intervention but instead becomes an evolving resource that educators can rely on throughout their careers. Because trauma-informed practice requires reflection, adaptation and continuous refinement, the digital environment supports educators in integrating these principles into their everyday teaching. The platform also offers VET institutions an accessible means to introduce new staff to trauma-informed concepts and to incorporate the resources into existing professional development programmes.

Through this objective, SAFELAB promotes European cooperation and digital transformation within VET. The platform aligns with Erasmus Plus priorities by enhancing accessibility, encouraging innovation and ensuring that trauma-informed education becomes a lasting feature of teacher development across Europe. It represents a significant investment in the professional resilience of educators and in the long-term well-being of learners.

04

Expand inclusion and equal opportunities in vocational education

Promoting inclusion is a guiding principle of SAFELAB, and this objective focuses on ensuring that VET institutions are equipped to meet the diverse needs of all learners. The proposal underscores that students affected by trauma face heightened risks of disengagement, lower academic performance and early school leaving. Such risks are intensified for learners from marginalized communities or those experiencing socio-economic disadvantage. SAFELAB therefore aims to expand equal opportunities by embedding trauma-informed approaches as a standard component of inclusive education.

By training educators to recognise and address trauma-related barriers to learning, the project enhances the ability of institutions to identify at-risk students early and respond with appropriate supportive measures. Trauma-informed classrooms encourage emotional safety, empathy and predictability, which reduce anxiety and create the conditions necessary for meaningful participation. As educators become more attuned to student needs, learners experience increased engagement, improved behaviour and stronger relationships with teachers.

This objective also strengthens institutional cultures. Through structured awareness-raising activities and the adoption of trauma-sensitive policies, VET centres can cultivate environments that value diversity, understand behavioural differences and promote equitable access to learning. The project encourages schools to reflect on how their practices affect vulnerable learners and to introduce strategies that reduce discrimination, stigma and exclusion. In doing so, SAFELAB aligns with the Erasmus Plus priority of promoting inclusion and equality within education systems.

The objective contributes to long-term social cohesion and economic participation by ensuring that young people who have experienced trauma are not left behind. With improved support structures, they are more likely to complete their studies, pursue further education and integrate successfully into the labour market. By reinforcing the principle that every learner deserves the opportunity to thrive, SAFELAB helps reshape VET institutions into spaces of belonging, empowerment and growth.

05

Promote mental health awareness through community engagement

A further objective of SAFELAB is to elevate public understanding of mental health and the effects of trauma through community-based engagement and awareness initiatives. The proposal indicates that trauma-informed education requires a supportive ecosystem that extends beyond the classroom. Families, local organisations, mental health professionals and policymakers all play important roles in shaping the environment in which students grow, learn and seek support. SAFELAB therefore uses outreach and awareness activities to encourage shared responsibility for student well-being.

The project includes a comprehensive Awareness Campaign on mental health and trauma, which disseminates accessible information through social media, local workshops and collaborative events. These actions introduce audiences to the importance of recognising ACEs, understanding their long-term consequences and adopting compassionate approaches when interacting with young people. The campaign aims to reduce stigma, strengthen community dialogue and empower individuals to engage constructively in conversations about emotional health.

National ACEs Awareness Days titled Healing Through Education further support this objective. These events bring together educators, community stakeholders, mental health specialists and policymakers to discuss trauma-informed practices and explore their relevance in diverse educational contexts. Participants exchange perspectives, examine current challenges and identify strategies that can enhance support for learners within and beyond institutional settings.

By promoting mental health awareness, SAFELAB contributes to building more resilient communities. Informed and engaged communities are better equipped to support children and young people who have experienced adversity. The project’s engagement activities encourage stakeholders to collaborate on sustainable solutions, influence educational policy and reinforce the value of trauma-informed approaches within VET systems. This objective therefore strengthens the societal foundations required for students to flourish academically, socially and emotionally.
