SAFELAB: Educators’ Empowerment with Trauma-Informed Practices for Supportive Learning Environments in VET

SAFELAB is a European initiative dedicated to transforming vocational education and training by empowering educators with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize, understand, and respond to the impact of trauma on learning. The project promotes a forward-looking vision for VET institutions, where every learner feels safe, supported, and able to thrive regardless of past experiences or personal challenges.

By integrating scientific evidence on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), innovative digital resources, and community engagement strategies, SAFELAB strengthens the capacity of VET educators to create emotionally secure and inclusive classroom environments. The project raises awareness about mental health in education, encourages resilience-building practices, and fosters a culture of empathy, understanding, and active support.

Through targeted trainings, an interactive e-Handbook, a dedicated digital learning platform, and national awareness events, SAFELAB contributes to a new generation of VET professionals who are confident in implementing trauma-informed approaches. The project ultimately aims to improve student engagement, reduce barriers to learning, and support long-term educational success across Europe.

SAFELAB is an Erasmus+ KA210 VET initiative designed to strengthen the capacity of vocational education and training systems to address the impact of trauma on learners. The project responds to a substantial and growing need within VET institutions across Europe. Research consistently demonstrates that a significant proportion of young people experience Adverse Childhood Experiences, commonly referred to as ACEs, which influence their emotional development, learning patterns, social engagement and overall well-being. Educators frequently report feeling underprepared to identify signs of trauma or to adapt their teaching methods in ways that support students who may be struggling with its effects. SAFELAB emerges as a structured response to this challenge with the intention of equipping VET educators with the knowledge, confidence and tools required to create learning environments that are safe, compassionate and inclusive.

The project is built on the understanding that trauma has profound implications for how individuals learn. Many learners enter vocational settings with histories that include instability, loss, neglect, discrimination, violence, or significant stress. When the effects of these experiences are not recognized, students often appear disengaged, unfocused or disruptive. Traditional teaching approaches may unintentionally exacerbate their difficulties. SAFELAB therefore introduces trauma-informed practices that enable educators to understand behavioural signals, respond with sensitivity, and foster a climate that encourages emotional safety. This approach does not aim to diagnose or treat trauma but rather to support teachers in creating pedagogical conditions that allow all students to participate fully and succeed academically.

At its core, SAFELAB seeks to transform VET learning environments through five key objectives. The first objective is to strengthen trauma-informed teaching in VET by providing structured and high-quality training for educators. Participants will explore the nature of trauma, learn to identify indicators of distress, and acquire teaching strategies that promote stability, trust, and engagement. The second objective is the development of a practical Trauma-Informed Toolkit, which includes ready-to-use resources, guidance materials and applied activities that educators can integrate directly into their lessons. The third objective focuses on the creation of a digital learning platform where educators can continue their professional development, access materials, engage in peer learning and participate in communities of practice. The fourth objective is to advance inclusion in VET by ensuring that students from marginalized or vulnerable backgrounds receive the support they need to remain engaged in their education. The fifth objective is to build mental health awareness across the broader community through communication campaigns, public events and stakeholder engagement.

The SAFELAB methodology is deeply collaborative. The project brings together three organisations with distinct and complementary expertise. APVET from Portugal provides leadership grounded in pedagogical innovation and VET alignment with labour market needs. PYLON ONE from Greece contributes extensive experience in social inclusion, education design and mental health promotion, and is responsible for developing the Trauma-Informed Practice e-Handbook as well as leading dissemination activities. Klaipeda Ernesto Galvanausko VTC from Lithuania, a long-established vocational training centre, contributes a strong foundation in teacher training and inclusive educational practice, hosting core training activities and providing practical insight into the realities of VET classrooms.

Across its duration, SAFELAB implements a structured sequence of activities that reflect the project’s commitment to practical impact. Two multi-day trainings will introduce educators to trauma-related concepts and guide them in applying trauma-sensitive approaches to real educational scenarios. These trainings will highlight core themes such as understanding ACEs, building emotional safety, responding to student needs with empathy, and fostering collaborative support networks. In parallel, the project will design a comprehensive e-Handbook containing audiovisual content, case studies, examples of good practice, implementation guidelines and evaluation tools. This resource will be made available in all partner languages, ensuring accessibility across Europe.

To encourage broader understanding and societal engagement, SAFELAB includes a coordinated Awareness Campaign on mental health and trauma. Through social media, workshops and community events, the campaign will promote dialogue about trauma in education and provide accessible information for educators, families and policymakers. In the final phase of the project, each partner country will host an ACEs Awareness Day titled Healing Through Education. These national events will present project outcomes, facilitate discussions among experts and stakeholders, and encourage the adoption of trauma-informed practices within local and regional contexts.

The expected impact of SAFELAB extends well beyond the project’s immediate activities. By equipping educators with practical knowledge and by raising awareness across institutions and communities, the project aims to contribute to long-term improvements in student engagement, retention and emotional well-being.

VET institutions will benefit from strengthened inclusion strategies and more responsive teaching practices. Educators will become more confident in supporting students who face emotional or psychological challenges. Students will have increased opportunities to thrive within environments that recognize their experiences and support their growth. Policymakers and community organisations will gain access to research-informed insights that encourage the integration of trauma-informed approaches into broader educational and social policies.

SAFELAB ultimately envisions VET systems where emotional safety is understood as a prerequisite for learning, where educators are empowered to respond to diverse student needs, and where trauma-informed education becomes an integral part of institutional culture. Through collaborative action, open access to resources and a strong commitment to inclusion, SAFELAB contributes to a future where every learner is supported, engaged and able to realise their potential.
